Body After Baby

  at 4/28/2009
In case you've been hiding in a tunnel, you might know that summer is right around the corner. In fact, May is just a couple of  days away. When I think May, I think June. When I think June, I think July. When I think July, I think August. June. July. August. I think summer. Hello swimsuit season!

Wait. Does this mean I have to stop wearing sweatpants every day?

If I hear one more person tell me that " it's so easy to lose weight while breast feeding," and that the weight "will just fall off," I might have to slap someone.

It's not that easy.  It's easy for some, but not all. And yes, some of the weight has just "fallen off," but I'm still not where I want to be. I still have a little ways to go.

Can I just tell you something that no one else knows?

I have stretch marks on my legs. MY LEGS. How in heavens is that possible? Sure I gained a fair amount of weight during pregnancy,  but really?? Don't even get me going on the beautiful red marks on my stomach. Oh, sigh.

I'm over the stretch marks. I can't do anything about it. They are what they are. My weight, however, I can do something about.  My health, my body image, my goals can be accomplished.

But it ain't easy. It takes work both in the kitchen and at the gym. It takes time, dedication, and commitment. It also helps the have the support and accountability of other people around you. Maybe you have 5 pounds you want to lose, maybe you have 50, or maybe you just want to get healthier or shape up for summer. Maybe you're 7 weeks postpartum or maybe it's been two years! It doesn't matter.

This is where the Body After Baby Fitness Challenge comes in.

I find it's much easier to reach your goals if you have the support of other people.

Here's what you have to do:
  1. Post on your blog your long term goals. Generally a goal that you want to have accomplished in 4- 6 months. Be specific
  2. List your short term goals for the week. For example, lose one pound this week or exercise four days a week.
  3. List your plan of action.  How you're going to reach your goals.
  4. Re-cap every Monday. On Monday's we will review our goals and our progress. We will post our success's and failures and share them with other's! Be honest.
  5. Leave a link to the post in your blog so that we can all motivate and support each other. Judgement is not allowed, only support and encouragement. (You can leave your link in the comments section for now.)
Who's with me?!

This challenge will start Friday, May 1st. Spend the next couple days thinking about your long term goals and posting about them. On Friday I will remind you that the challenge has started and the following Monday we will post our goals for the week.

Maybe when we're all done we can go swimsuit shopping together! :)

Seriously. If that doesn't motivate you, I don't know what will.

Does it count when your baby is 7? I lost the weight, gained some back, lost some. Now when I look in the mirror it just looks like my body has shifted all around--even though I weigh the same as before I started!

LOL! I'm with you!

Great post, count me in! It's been 14 months and I still have 10 pesky pounds hanging around.

The stretchmarks on your legs, yeah, I have those too. I got them with my first baby, but surprisingly, they didn't get any worse with my second. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone!

Okay, nobody is allowed to hate me. I only gained 15 pounds during my entire pregnancy, but I have six months of morning, noon, and night sickness to thank for that. I had lost all of that before I left the hospital. Now, I've lost (blocking my face from the threatened slap) 41 pounds and counting. I am breastfeeding, but I contribute most of it to the fact that I'm much more interested in sleep than eating. I still would like to loose some more, though, so I'm anxious to learn more!

Forgot! Jared's getting a box from work so I can ship your socks tomorrow...if you tell me where to ship them to. Email me!

Deb- yes it counts, of course. :)

Alexis- congrats on your lost of 41 pounds! That's awesome. No fun about your morning sickness though. :(

I'm so in! We need a graphic! And, yeah, I'm behind you on the "the weight just falls off" while breastfeeding thing! Hardly.

Alexis - I actually LOST weight while I was pregnant. The week after my daughter was born I was down 25 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight! lol I have no idea how that happened. However, my pre-pregnancy weight left much to be desired after years of infertility meds!

I'll be right there with you soon (I'm 33 weeks pregnant) and will definitely have to check back on your progress.

Well, here I go -- I'll join you! I just gave birth to #6 on March 2nd and also had surgery (tubal) on 4/14. I was told to wait 2 weeks after surgery to exercise which would have been 2 days ago. I've always been overweight, since I was 12, and have just shy of 100 pounds to loose -- yuck! But I've had 5 babies in 6 years, 3 months (I know, not really an excuse) and things have definitely gotten out of control.

I'm with Paige -- we need a graphic to post on our blogs. Good luck to all! ~Karen

Good idea on the graphic idea. Does anyone have any ideas? So excited to start this!

Would it be helpful if I had a Mr. Linky going so every Monday when we posted our stats we could link to all of your blogs?

I posted!I'm not sure I know exactly how Mr. Linky works, but that would probably be a good idea!

I'm scared to even say that I'm in, for fear of failing I guess. My "baby" will be 4 on Monday, I still have 20 pounds to lose. AND we want to start trying for baby #3 soon & I'd like to start back at my prepreg weight!

Ok, I'm in!

I'm working on finding a rhythm for our day to day and my exercise routine is going to have to change. :( I have lost 100lbs. since the birth of Ivy. I want to maintain that weight loss and tone my body. Count me in, and I will post as soon as possible in my blog.

Mama Notes said...

Eastkentuckygal- Congrats on losing 100 pounds!! That is awesome. Molly and Heather- great first post. Thanks for starting us off right. :)

I'm in it! I actually started my "Holy crap summer's coming up!" plan last week.

Basically, I quit eating crap. It was hard, but after only one week, my clothes fits better. I figure chasing after two kids is enough exercise for now, let me focus on the food part. Instead of reaching for an Oreo like I used to (oh they are so good!!!!) I ate an apple. And I was HAPPY ABOUT IT!! Go me.

Okay, I need to go post this on my blog now. Toodles!!! :)

Tara said...

Oh and NO, baby weight doesn't come off by breastfeeding. My son ate every 2 hours for the first three months of his life and I will tell you that all breastfeeding did was make ME want to eat every 2 hours. So boo to them!!!

Mama Notes said...

Tara that's awesome! I love me some double stuffed oreo's! Go you!! :)

Samantha~ I totally would....but I am kind of an odd one, for I actually don't know what I have gained (although I am sure it is A WHOLE FREAKIN' LOT!!!!lol) To make a loonnngg story short, I am a "recovered" anorexic (5 years in recovery!!)and due to this, my psych and ob thought it best not to let me know my weight during my pregnancy and I still don't weigh myself. So I am totally into losing my baby weight, I will just have to do it without weighing myself.......just waiting for my old clothes to fit. I am cheering everyone on, though! ( :

Mama Notes said...

annacalista- I totally understand. Keep in mind though, that "Body After Baby" is not JUST about losing weight. It's about that, but also about being healthy, getting your body image back, being a healthy example for your children, etc.. so maybe one of those categories would work better for you? Either way, I'm glad you'll support us, thank you!!! :)

Didn't so well last week! YIKES! Oh well, trying to do better this week!

I'm joining late. I added my link to the most recent Mr. Linky. I was overweight when I got pregnant, and gained and gained during the pregnancy. I'm not going to set a hard goal for pounds to lose since I'm breastfeeding and making sure I can make milk is more important than how I look. But man...I want my body back.
