She then proceeds to tell me how she held her granddaughter for two hours once. Her arms were sore and she was waiting for her son and it started raining and I stopped listening...
Then she said this: "He's a husky little guy."
I have no idea what she meant by this, so I just smiled. I didn't say "thanks," or "you think so?!" or, "I know! Isn't he?!" I just smiled and she got the notion to continue about her goodwill shopping business. So here I am thinking, what the heck is a husky? My son is a husky? Hm.
I get home and enter "husky" into google which brings me to Wikipedia- the free encyclopedia. It says, "Husky is a general term for several breeds of dogs used as sled dogs. Because of the strength and stamina, the name "husky" is used extensively for sport mascots..."
That was the only definition. A dog. Is she calling my son a dog? A strong baby? A mascot?

In my neck of the woods (the south) "husky" means that someone is chunky or a bit on the heavy side. I used to hear it a lot with my oldest son.
So she's callin' my baby heavy?! Excuse me! He's in the 35% for his weight thankyouverymuch.
LOL! We use "husky" for someone on the heavy side too. That's funny. I have people say all the time "What a big baby!", and my Peanut isn't even in the 5% for weight! People have no idea what a baby of a particular age is supposed to look like.
That's hilarious! "Husky" for any baby is ridiculous!! Maybe she thought he was younger than he is, but I've seen photos and there is no way he is "husky". My little guy at three months was in the 95% for weight... and no one was calling him husky! Good for you to just smile and hint that she should be on her way. Whenever I wear my daughter in my baby sling (a must have when you've got 2!) people just stare and stare at me like I have 2 heads or something. Ri-diculous.
I'm familiar with 'Husky' meaning on the heavy side as well. I have to say that I've never heard anyone call a baby husky! lol. Don't you just love the crazy things people tell you when you have a baby in arms :-)
Haha! I think she means cute! That's what I would mean. Maybe chunky and cute? I think chunky babies are cuter babies, haha. Don't worry. Nosey peopel are weird sometimes!

When my middle daughter was a young she had a cotton top (snow white hair). Now my other 2 daughters had dark black hair and black eyes like their dad...she had fair skin and blue eyes like me. The lady asked if that was her natural color???? OK she was maybe 3 years old.....yea I just had it colored at the salon....come on please............why do people say such dumb things.
Husky is a compliment.

Rachel- yes, I have a carrier. But I was just running into the store so I wanted to hold him!
lol....I swear....you have to love little old ladies but sometimes, they can drive you a little nuts! Case in point, when I was pregnant, a well-meaning little lady literally followed me around the store, giving me unsolicited advice at every turn! I thought my rather short answers would give her the hint that my very pregnant self was not in such a conversing mood, but no.....she continued to turn up wherever I went!
With my daughter I never really showed. I looked about 4 months pregnant when I had her. A little old lady came up to me and asked how far along I was, I said 8 1/2 months, and she looked at me and said that my baby wasn't getting any food and it was probably going to die.
I love them to death!!

A husky baby? That's so ambiguous. I hate ambiguous. I'm a mean what you say, say what you mean kinda girl. But, at least she didn't call him a her. That's what they always say about mine. "She's pretty." "She" is dressed like a boy, with a boy name (which I am, incidentally, repeating to eliminate confusion), and his boy face on. They are boys! THEY ARE ALL BOYS!
I've heard husky for a toddler, but never said to the mother. To the mother only if everyone is having a conversation about the "little football player" because of build not always weight. I think oftentimes people don't know what to say. I think I would have smiled too so she'd get the hint to move on. It seems like the folks who comment on pregnant bellies and infants never heard the saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say..." :) I'm glad I clicked by your blog from Mom Bloggers Club.
I guess she meant husky, as in chubby. My two littlest boys have been called that and (I think) it is a compliment...
That's the word people I know use to indicate "fat." A strong, solid looking baby like my step-son was (is - I am, unfortunately, not in his life anymore, but not by choice) often called husky, but he wasn't fat. He was what I would call "stout" or "solid." He probably will play football later. I would think of husky as a PC way to say "fat." But the woman was from a different generation, so maybe she meant well. In any case, I think you handled your response very well!
Husky is a euphemism for overweight. My brother shops in the husky section at Sears (or is it JCPenney?) I wish someone would invent a device that mommies could use to zap people in mouth when they made inappropriate comments about their appearance (prenatal and postnatal) or their babies/children. Whatever happened to "if you don't have something nice to say?" Sheesh!
To me, "husky" means big, stocky, or chubby, but I doubt that she meant it as anything other than a compliment.
Babies are supposed to be a little chubby and people love chubby babies.
My daughter was born a month early, weighing under 5 lbs, and let me tell you that after months of "Oooooh! What a tiiiiny baby!" I have never been prouder (of us both) than when someone looked at her last week and said, "Oh, I just love chubby babies!"
