Sun Safety.
Summer is such a fun time- playing in the hose, going to the pool, being outside-but it's also a time when we need to be extra protective of our babies skin. As you all know, children have much more sensitive skin than adults do. Imagine your body being outside in direct sunlight and multiply that by ten. Or maybe more- children have itty bitty fragile sensitive skin. Children, especially babies under a year, really should not be in direct sunlight. If it's at all possible, always keep them in the shade. If shade is not an option, use sunscreen. Choose a brand with the least amount of chemicals such as California Baby.
In the American Academy of Pediatrics safety tips for 2009, SPF of at least 15 is recommended. Personally, I think the higher the better. I use SPF 50 on my face! But, I'm sort of anti-sun, if you can call it that. Look for a sunscreen that has UVA and UVB protection. Wear protective clothing and become friends with tall tree's.
Car Safety.
Never leave your child- of any age- in the car for any amount of time when it's hot outside. The National Highway Association Safety Administration states that a car can literally turn into an oven in minutes. It only takes approximately 3 minutes for a car to go from 70 degrees into the hundred's. Always take your child out of the car first, then go back for groceries or what not. Always.
Water Safety.
If you have a pool in your backyard, (I wish) always keep toys out of it when you're not in it. Consider keeping a fence around the pool, have life jackets and floatations devices available, and most importantly, learn CPR and make sure your kids know how to swim by starting swimming lessons early.
Here's to a fun and safe summer!

Sun safety is important. But some sun exposure w/o sunscreen is important for Vit D production.
That's true Holly! It doesn't take much though. :)
