Winter Wonderland

  at 11/29/2009
It is so winter-y here. Am I at the mountains (well, yes I am) because I feel like I should put on my ski boots and go skiing. I don't ski. But if I did, I'd strap them on and ski myself down the road, waving like Ms. America at all the cars passing by.

I don't really know what I'm talking about.

We made it safe and sound in Alaska. It is chilly and gorgeous. First, let me clear two things up.

It's not that cold.

Today, it was 30 degrees. So sure, probably can't wear a sun dress, but it's nothing extreme. I personally love the cold air. It's so refreshing to me. Every morning (the last two mornings) I have walked outside and said ahh this feels so good on my face!

I have ran across one problem however.

My feet are cold. I have a hole in my tennis shoes. I need new shoes.

It's not that dark.

I of course can only speak for the two days that I've been here, but so far it's "dark" from 4:30pm 9:00am. It's not that much different that Oregon right now. This was taken about 9:00 this morning. It was also pretty cloudy today.

Alaska is just another state. There are Target's and Safeway's. Gas stations and Starbucks. There is a Gap, an Old Navy and a Costco.

There are kids playing on the swing set in 10 degree weather. There are ice skating rinks in the schools, indoor water parks, moose hanging out in your front yard, and mountains out your back yard.

It really is beautiful here. Snow everywhere. Mountains everywhere.

Driving down the road and out your windows (if you're lucky) you will see mountains and mountains. Some are so close that you feel like you can reach out and touch them. There are also parts that are just fields, where supposedly bears and moose will roam. I haven't met any yet.

We have spent most of today and yesterday driving around looking at places to live, so I haven't had much time to take pictures or soak this all in.

This is my view at the moment. This cute little tree decorated for Christmas. We are staying with an incredible couple right now who has welcomed us into their home until we find a place.

Lucas says hello and he loves ya'll. The next picture you see of him will be in a snow suit!

Image the cuteness that will invade you!!

In december. it will probably start getting dark around three and light out about 10:30 maybe 11:00. Still not totally bad. the sun was shining in my windows this morning.

This has been kind of a particular year though. it usually snows the middle of October and this year it snowed the first week of November. and it has much colder in November than what is our usual. we were having times where it was below zero and that isn't usually normal for this area until around the end of December/January. it's really not so bad here. :)

So I'm curious to know...did you drive there with all your stuff or did you fly and have your stuff delivered. Silly question, but so curious...

I'm so happy to see you posting. I was worried you would be without internet for an extended amount of time.

Can't wait to see Lucas in his snowsuit. My Hubby has always wanted to go to Alaska, we are eager to experience it through your eyes.

Great pic's. Thanks for sharing! I've been anxious to see how everything is going. Did you fly or drive? So cool that there is a Costco and that it's like any other state just really cold! Hope everything goes well!

I love it! It is beautiful. I am so glad that you were blessed with traveling mercy and some great new friends that have welcomed you into their home. Lucas looks as happy as can be. It must be that his momma has kept her cool and stayed relaxed through all this. He sees it as fun and isn't all stressed out. It is his big adventure and that is so much fun! Take care this week!

It is SO beautiful!! I'm very glad to hear that you have Target, Starbucks, etc! Isn't it funny how we tend to think of Alaska as igloos and frozen wilderness, as though...at least I do anyway! Hope you find a place and get settled soon! :)

It's so much fun seeing my city and state through your eyes. :) I'm glad you like it. I think it is a great place to raise kids. I hope your husband likes his job. I worked with ASD before having Clara. They do a pretty good job of taking care of their employees. Well, enjoy! And it will start getting lighter again after Dec. 21. The holidays take on a whole new signifigance when you celebrate the return of the light as well. :)
