When you live in Alaska, you see moose occasionally. On the playground, in your backyard or walking across the street. It's like a cat or a dog, except bigger.
My husband took these pictures at his school. His 5th graders could not believe that we hadn't seen a moose when we moved here. They were (are) so cute. Every day they would ask, have you seen a moose yet? Then finally, we did.
So now that I live in Alaska, I can act like moose are little squirrels crossing the street. Just don't feed them nuts. When family comes to visit they'll say, Oh my gosh, did you see that moose!? It's huge! And because it's become normal to me, I'll probably say, Oh him? Oh that's just Billy.
Or something like that.
I haven't seen one when I've been out my car though. ( ETA: I need to clarify. I have seen a moose on several occasions while driving, but never had my camera handy! They go across the street pretty fast. ) But I hear people talk about it like it's just a little dog, searching for his tennis ball. People will be skiing or or what not and can be yards away from a moose. They probably wave or something and then carry on about their business.
So, that's what a moose looks like for those wanting to know. A horse but uglier.

I'm so jealous!!! Not, sure why, but I am!!! Awesome-sauce!!! =)
And hey, I named all the squirrels around my parents house, too.
I laughed so hard when I read this! We moved to Northern Canada just over a year and a half ago and went through the same thing. I still get excited when I see one! And yes, they are ugly- VERY ugly!
Have you tried the meat yet? It's actually very good and has little fat in it. Using the ground meat to make burgers is one of our favourites!
Christina is right. Moose is yummy. So is elk.
It seems like you guys are adjusting so well!! :) Glad you got to see a moose even if it was in a picture!!
I haven't had moose! I HAVE had elk and I like it! I don't know why, but I think I would feel weird eating moose now that I see them every week walking around. I know its just like fish or chickens or cow..... I'm sure I'll try it eventually!
so, they are not dangerous? Like they won't chase after you or anything?
I think that would take a lot for me to get used to!
My sister moved to Alaska (Fairbanks area) a little over a year ago and was amazed at all of the wildlife. She loves to look at the moose.
Oh, I love the beauty of an animal like this. A moose is exciting to see when it is something that you do not see everyday! Alaska definitely has the natural surroundings for a moose to have the perfect home!

WOW! So cool, I wish I could see a moose outside my window. Do they scare easy like deer do?
oh no, Moose are MUCH cuter than horses!
Here in CO we see a lot of elk and buffaloes depending where we go. You can almost walk right up to the elk.
That's so crazy! All we see around here are deer and turkey!
You are way too funny!
They do not scare easily. Barking dogs, the moose don't even flinch. Moose will hurt you so let them be.
Ha! My best friend from HS lives in Montana and talks of Moose as dogs too. Cracks me up. I would be HORRIFIED to be that close to something so HUGE.
So neat!
We hiked among some moose on Isle Royale before Logan was born. They were really used to humans and would come walking right through your campsite.
I'm happy you (sort of) got to see one.
I'd hate to run up on one of those in the woods! They are huge!!!
That is awesome! I wish we lived near nature! lol
Moose is very lean...it has a wilder (stronger) taste than beef, but i like it. I have had to adapt recipes though because it's so lean (the other night I made a 'mooseloaf' and ended up adding a few tablespoons of bacon grease just to get the consistency right, LOL!)
Before we moved to AK I'd never imagined that seeing moose and bald eagles would become as commonplace as seeing dogs, but it has. I hope I never loose the wonder of it!
I guess people encounter them all the time while on walks/skiing/etc. If/when it happens to me I am going to FREAK OUT.
