The theory and purpose behind rain gutter bookshelves is that instead of children seeing the spine of a book, they see the front of the book. They see the colors and the pictures; thus picking up books more and reading them. It's suppose to promote and encourage reading. Plus, I think it adds a fun addition to a room! It's like a decoration in itself!
These bookshelves are called rain gutter bookshelves because, they are rain gutters. Don't be surprised if people at Lowes or Home Depot think you're crazy when you tell them you're making bookshelves. Um, it's not really the right season for gutters right now. Oh I'm making bookshelves!! Just carry on your merry way and act like you know what you're doing, even if you don't.
This was my first time making these shelves, so I really had no idea what to expect or what they would look like in person. I was nervous that they might look bad or like gutters but I really don't think they do! I think they turned out awesome and my son loves it.
They are pretty sturdy, with just a screw on each side. I was also surprised with how many books they held. Depending on if you want to overlap books or not, you can fit quite a bit on there! We put our board books on the bottom and our nicer paper back books on top so Lucas can't ruin them, as he cant' reach the top ones as well.

We cut the rain gutter bookshelves into two four feet sections with a saw. My husband did one and I did the other so I could explain to you how to do it. It took us less than 30 minutes to instal these and it was relatively easy. Easier than those "put together yourself" bookshelves you can buy!
I believe there are more than one way to make these shelves. You can add brackets in the middle or on the sides if you need to, although I don't think they look very good. To make two shelves like I have here you will need:
I was pleasently surprised at how many books these held. It's hard to tell from the pictures but I have many books overlapping. Depending on the look you want, or the amount of books you have, you can really add a few or quite a bit. I've experimented and I can easily fit 15 -20 books on one shelf.
Lucas loves it! He pulls them off the shelves all the time and plays with them. He even let me read to him, him sitting in my lap- sitting still!- for 2 1/2 minutes which is the longest I've experienced since he has been mobile. We have boxes of books, some in our closet storage and some in the living room. I plan on switching out the books every couple weeks or so. Except for the board books; those will probably stay as we don't have as many of those and he can't tear the pages out!
Do you have rain gutter bookshelves? Have you thought about it? What is your current storage situation for your kids books? I would highly recommend rain gutters! So fun!
I believe there are more than one way to make these shelves. You can add brackets in the middle or on the sides if you need to, although I don't think they look very good. To make two shelves like I have here you will need:
- 1 rain gutter - We used a vinyl rain gutter. You then cut it with a table saw in two pieces, or three or four depending on how long you want the shelves to be. Ours are 4 feet each and we had a little left over.
- 4 end caps- you will need an end cap on each side. These go on the end of each side of a shelf.
- 4 screws- I drilled a hold in the end cap, then the screw through it and into the wall. Make sure to put a level inside the shelf to make sure it is straight.
- Drill
- Level
- Screwdriver- not totally necessary but I used it to get the screw started before going to the drill
- Books
For one rain gutter, four end caps and four screws these bookshelves in total cost me $17.00. You can't beat a price like that for something that promotes reading, looks fun and adds color to a room!

Oh, they turned out so great! I love it. I wish I'd know about these before we did our kids' rooms!
I see you have "Brown Bear Brown Bear" and "Dr. Seuss ABC!" Those are up there with my all-time faves to read to my boys. I used to whisper the ABC book rhythmically to Logan to get him to fall asleep. I have read them both so many times I have them memorized and when Logan was 1 and we took him on his first overnight backpacking trip, I was reciting them to him as we walked through the woods.
Does Lucas have "Everywhere Babies?"
The shelves look great, I love the wall color and can't wait to see the whole room, if you choose to show us! Lucas is precious, too! So big!
Those are great! I will keep them in mind when we get our own house and we have more room for shelves.
Oh, that is genius!!! I love, love, love it!
Those are absolutely adorable and such a great idea. If you hadn't said they were rain gutters, I don't think anyone would have figured out that they were. Lucas looks precious with his books :)
What a super cute idea! Great way to store books at arms length for the little one :)
Oh my goodness!!! Those shelves are awesome! Me thinks I'll have to copy you :-) My boys are getting ready for big boy beds, so I'll wait until then as I have no clue how their room will be arranged. I'll let you know and post some pics when the time comes.
Thanks so much for sharing this cool idea!
What a fantastic idea! I'm forwarding this to my hubby, so that he can add it to his "hunny-do" list! /giggle/

These turned out super cute! I'm definitely putting this on my list of things to do. We have a book basket right now, but this is way cuter! I'm kind of clueless in the arena of rain gutters, but do they have different colors? I'm thinking about putting up a few of these in the living room to display coffee table books without cluttering up the coffee table (or leaving those books in easy reach of the little one), and I was thinking a slate gray would look good.
I love this. we're still working on finishing up the nursery/baby's room, and can always use more storage and space for books [we're both big readers]. I also have a Lowe's discount card to use by next month, so perfect timing. :)
Those shelves look awesome! What a great idea to promote reading in your kids! You did a great job!
I love them!
We have so many books I don't know what to do with them all... we have a library in both girls' rooms and downstairs in the play area! I have finally decided that I am only going to buy books from Scholastics every other month and just rent the rest from the library!
These are fantastic! Love them!
What a great idea! We might have to try that!
So cute!! -We just have a regular old boring bookshelf.
what a great idea! might have to try this in our new playroom!
I LOVE IT and I'll be stealing this idea when we find a house too!!! THANKS for sharing!
I have a friend who did this in her kids' playroom! They are so nice and easy to do - I love the idea. Not too expensive either, from what I have been told. Yours turned out great! Can't wait to see the whole room!
I love these! Especially because they are just his size!
That is a great idea! We have so many books right now, that they would never work. Great for a young child's room though!
My son has a big bookshelf filled with books. He has so many books that we actually have to get a bigger bookshelf for him. I turned my daughter's closet into a book area. I stacked up multiple book crates, filled them with books, and put a comfy chair in there. She loves sitting in her closet, reading.
I think books are so important. Reading is a daily activity for all of us!
Krystal,
no we don't have that book. I'll look into it!
Clearly Family,
$17 total!
Lexie,
we have a ton too. TONS. boxes. ha! That's why I plan on rotating these out every couple of weeks. Always something new! I love that idea in the closet!
Karey,
I think they just come in white. We thought about spray painting them but decided not too.
What a brilliant idea! I totally want to steal it for my girls' playroom!!!
i am so doing this for our sons room!!!
Love them!! They look awesome. I will have to try that when we move to the new place!! Thanks!
You might be able to get the Home Depot employees to cut the gutter for you. :)

LOVE this book. It is so sweet. I read it so many times to Logan and now I read it to Jordan almost every night. It has the cutest pictures in it. There are cloth diapered babies, breastfeeding babies, babies in slings, and just babies being loved like crazy. A very precious book and another thing that is going to be put in my memory box when the boys grow up.
Are you kidding me??? That is a fantastic idea! I am so going to steal it! Thank you for sharing. I just found your blog and LOVE it!!
Stealing this idea when we get a house!!!
By the way, you have an award on my blog...
That is such an awesome idea!! i love them!! I might just have to make some to put in Brady's room!!!
i want to do them near the boys beds as they read in bed. currently all their books are on a book shelf in our living room but that doesn't work so well when they take them to bed and they rarely make it back out "alive"
Those are great! I wish we had the wall space in the nursery for them.
What we did instead was buy a short, regular bookshelf and put it in our living room/kitchen area (bolted to the wall of course, with bumpers on the edges). All our son's board books are laid out flat there, some on each level. This way he sees the pictures on the cover and can also reach up and knock them down (pulling things off shelves is one of his new activities). He sits in the corner "reading" books for 10-30 min. at a time :-)
Love, love, LOVE this idea!! My 18th month old will be thanking you!! Such an easy and inexpensive project!
I LOVE this idea!! Looks great!
This is great! I would definitely do this if there was more room in my baby's bedroom. It is pretty much full right now with the crib, changing table, shelves (with toys and books) and dresser. It's a tiny room. Anyway, great job on the project and on the photos showing it to us!
Hi Samantha--These are darling. Great job and I love the color you chose for Lucas' room.
great idea! They look great!
What a fabulous idea! I love it.
I am a 2nd grade teacher and used to teach kindergarten. Anyway I saw a teacher had these in her classroom and never thought of doing it in our boys' rooms! I also thought they might be hard to do, but you've inspitrd us to try!
I've never heard of those before - what a GREAT idea! I love them!
I found your blog(?) through the "Cloth Diaper Whisperer" newsletter from Diapershops.com. It was recommended by the February "spotlight mom", and I decided to check it out.
I saw the rain gutter book shelves and was hooked. What a great idea! Right now I use an oversized shelving unit for my son's books. Only the very short books will stand up, so I have to lay most of his books in piles on the shelves. What a pain. (Not a big deal for him yet, as he's only 5 months.) My space is limited because of the shape of his room, and I haven't found a bookshelf that will fit in the area I want it...but these gutter shelves will!! They won't take up precious floor space! And, I can even customizze them to follow the shape of the wall and ceiling.
I can't wait tp make some for James. I'm so glad I found you.
His room is coming together beautifully! (Who needs HGTV?) Those are awesome! Once we get settled somewhere I am definetly going to put a couple of these babies up! Thanks for the inspiration!
MAGNIFICENT IDEA!!!!
These are FAB!!! Just sent this to my DH to see if he would make some for us.
I'm showing my husband too! This is a great idea! This would even be a good idea for recipe books in the kitchen or to show off scrapbooks in the living room. I'm going to use this idea for sure! Super cute!
You have an award (well actually, two)! http://www.theclothdiaperreport.com/2010/02/sunshine-lemonade-stand-awards.html
What a great idea. I have been trying to come up ith a surdy and safe storage solution for Baby DIVA's books. This just might be the winner!
Those are amazing!! We're redoing our son's room (goodbye toddler bed) and this is a GREAT idea! I hate how all the books don't fit right on his shelves or he has trouble putting them back up so they stay on..etc, etc, etc *sigh* Showing this to hubby so he doesn't think I'm crazy!
So, I TOTALLY love this idea! I'm sooo going to use this in my daughter's room!
omg, how did i miss this post! brilliant!
